1967 Alfa Romeo T33 by Mike Sells

I acquired this Carrera body in a swap knowing it was incomplete. Like some of the Scalextric cars, the lower body half WAS the chassis. The upper half was just that but I did receive the rear deck scoop, original roll bar and glass, all of which would have been very difficult to re-create. The lower body panels were added by laminating stacks of styrene sheet together for the nose and tail, then gluing them on to the body. Lower side panels were made from large square styrene strips. When the glue was dry, the nose, tail and side panels were shaped with a sanding block and blended into the original body. Excess material was ground away underneath using a large ball cutter in the old Dremel tool.

The Alfa chassis was unique, consisting of three large diameter tubes doubling as the fuel tanks. Structures at the front and rear connected the suspension components to the chassis. Large diameter styrene tubing was perfect for this application and various smaller tubing, strip and sheet became the structures.

Suspension parts are all modified from those in the Airfix/MPC Porsche 917, available again praise be as it's one of the best parts sources ever produced. As the Alfa tail is fairly high and much of the rear suspension is exposed, it was necessary to build what was visible, much like the FLY Ferrari 512S and Porsche 908 racers. There is no engine detailing but the car does have complete cockpit and driver details. Wheels are castings from a toy car. I only had one original and have no idea what it's from. It only has 10 holes and should have 11 but, hey, that's close enough for me. Tires are Monogram '69 Nova units up front and IMC NASCAR tires in back. Paint is Testor's dark red; markings are various UMi numbers to match the car as raced at Sebring in '67.
