Having seen this car at Goodwood Festival of
speed I just had to convert the Matchbox static kit. Firstly the main
body bits
were superglued together. At this stage I didn't glue the base to the
top. I had an Atlas motor that had been homeless for years and wanted
to combine this with a Pink Kar front steering unit as found in their
Bugatti. All that was required was a small piece of brass plate bent twice
to be fixed between the motor's magnet and frame. The steering unit was
fixed by two bolts through the brass plate. Once the chassis was made
to the correct length I glued the underbody to the upper body and then
carefuly razor sawed away the chassis opening. A base for the driver was
added and the whole lot was painted using acrylic paints (primer first).
The wheels were a pig to do but were quite successful. Using the Pink
Kar Bugatti wheels the inserts were removed (they pull out using a jeweller's
screwdriver) then the outer edge was trimmed away. I then
used some Bentley wire wheel outers and trimmed the tyre locating flange
away and also thinned them down. Once these were added to the trimmed
Bugatti wheels they provided something for the tyre to sit on again. So
all four wheels were done and the spokes painted with a good net effect.
The little man was made using an Airfix army figure. These came in separate
parts like arms, heads, legs, upper body etc. and have proven really useful
when modelling little men. In spite of the kit coming with decals I made
my own using a colour photocopier. I wanted the model to complement my
other Auto Union (a Scalextric resin copy) and it does.
