Mecom Hussein MK1. My entry for The Marconi Proxy Race

by Mark Gussin

For my third entry in Philippe de Lespinay's wonderful Marconi race I wanted to use one of Barry Pitcher's superb "Tassie Devil" chassis. Running out of time, as always, to get my entries in I decided to use a clear vacuum slot car bodyshell to see just how good it can be made. The shell was (I think) made by Dubro. It had yellowed, the sides hadn't been cut straight and there was a hole that had been drilled in the back! But it was a bit different!

Starting with Barrie's "Tassie Devil" chassis. It is brass, quite heavy (but the weight is in the right place), it is available in a number of different sizes, it is adjustable, it takes a number of motor variations and in my completely biased(!) view, is fabulous!!! Oh, and flex; no chance. It doesn't!

Keep 'em coming Barrie!

I only had to make very minor mods to get it to go under the short wheelbase of the Hussein. I removed the rear protrusion, made the wheelbase as short as possible by extenting the slots on the front axle mount, I also soldered mounts for pin fixing the bodyshell.
The bodyshell was sanded with very fine wet and dry on the outside to provide a good key for the paint. The motor (Cheetah) was installed, Slot.it gears and axle (fantastically smooth) and MRRC front and rear wheels were installed into the chassis. As you can see from the picture below the side panels were extended to straighten them up and then they were filled. The hole in the back was also filled.

So it was time to paint. As usual I used acrylic 1:1 car paints, on the outside.

The paint went on well so the next step was applying the home-made decals and painting a clear coat over the lot. Once this was dry I added the interior, roll bar, driver and front grill. Oh and I also installed the guide!

The Cheetah motor is fast so the tyres have to be glued to the wheels otherwise they would balloon. The car on my little test track circle performed well. Exceptionally well considering the narrow tyres. What's more the whole car was very, very quick to do.
