Lola T70 Wheels

The wheels for the Top Slot car were the challenge but the results were very effective and could be applied to a number of other wheel styles. They were done as follows: I had a brainwave. Why not use the Porsche GT1 Fly wheel (see illustration). They have the great advantage that they are in two parts. Using a crude press made from a piece of metal tubing and wooded dowel I separated the two parts. Checked that the Ferrari 512S tyres fit front and back; they do. After casting in resin some Aurora T70 wheel inserts I had, I filed them as thin as possible, including the front. These then fit in to the wheel outer and the hub is pushed back in behind them. Voila! The hub has to be shortened and care needs to be taken not to make it too short. To strengthen it I filled the backs of the hubs with resin so that they can be cut right back. Glueing the insert to the hub is also advisable.

For the Lola T70 I used the Goodyear labelled tyres which can be bought separately. Photo-etched knock-offs were added using Detail-Master 1:24th scale ones. When I get round to it I shall cast the inserts as a whole for a few different types of wheel.
